Shine

Good afternoon! It's my third day in Ontario and it's been a pretty relaxed trip so far. I stayed at my aunt's house all day yesterday watching movies with my sisters and interviewing my mom for my psychology project. As I was texting a friend, I realized the need for art and artists in the world.

Well, I do. And it's not because I wanna get famous (although it would be nice) or even to flaunt my literary competence; it's simply because I feel so much, so often and I can't keep it bottled up inside because I know it will eat me up. The words and the sentences you're reading are the materialization of my feelings and emotions. Who would we be if we weren't able to convey the things we feel through the things we love? There are Praise Team dancers who travel miles from Surrey, BC in order to showcase their talents and love for their art. There are authors and writers who've inspired future generations with the pieces they've written and shared with the world. Singers and musicians who have used their passion for their craft in order to innovate and inspire. It was from the annals of their minds that they were able to invent genres such as blues, jazz, rock and even pop. These were all things that they felt but had no way of conveying until they found the thing that set their soul on fire.

For me, it's writing. For my friend, it's music. For my other friend, it's photography. If I didn't have the ability to write down my feelings and experiences, how else would I be able to show you who I really am? In person, I tend to be very shy and introverted; it doesn't stop me however from interacting fully and attentively with those who choose to approach me or befriend me. I love the stories that people tell me because it puts me in their shoes, their perspective. The same goes for when I listen to my friend's sound cloud cover and lose myself within the piano, the harmonies and her voice. When I look at my friend's photo of a baby smiling in the arms of her mother, I paint an image of love and intimacy. Art is everywhere around us.

It is the visual realization of our feelings and emotions. I do not paint well but if I did, you would probably have no idea what I was thinking but maybe someone will. That is why I have this blog because I know for a fact that among the 7 billion people on this world, I am not the only one who feels this way. If I could write 100 blog posts and touch the heart of one person, I would be the happiest person in the world. Because our lives require connection. We need to interact with others and show them how we feel. Whether it is through music, dance, words, photos, paintings, art is necessary. Humans were given this ability to feel and most of the time, it eats us up. It devours our will to share who are to others, afraid they may reject us after seeing our flaws. More often than not, it leads to overthinking and thoughts of inadequacy.

But being able to feel is not a curse.

It is a blessing that when tamed can conceive some of the most beautiful art the world has ever seen. Understanding that life sucks and being able to smile through it is art. Not getting the results we wanted but trying even harder the next chance we get is art. Seeing the person we desired end up with someone else and being able to be at peace with it is art in itself too. Art is in everything we see and everything we do. It is okay to feel. It is okay to want to be angry at the world or feel cheated. And it is okay to feel invincible and at the top of the world. To be joyful.

But how are you going to let the world know about your happiness?
Your sadness?
Your rage?
Your peace?
How do you want the world to see you?

Will you silently pass by this world until the day you die? Or will you set yourself ablaze in your art, blazing bright so those around you, can see you for who you really are. The sun, providing life and sustaining it. The world we live in today can be dull, colourless and a perpetual overcast of endless clouds. But you are the sun. Break through. Your rays are your pieces of art.

Let the world see it.
